TRADITIONAL fish and chips will be served in Romsley for the first time since 1974 to mark the village Scout group's 50th anniversary.

Villagers and former Scouts are being invited to the celebration on Saturday, September 24 at Romsley Scout Centre, St Kenelm’s Road.

The event starts at 1pm with an all-day exhibition of photographs and memorabilia of Romsley St. Kenelm’s Scout Group over the last 50 years.

Tea and cake will be available all afternoon and there will be entertainment from Halesowen District Scout Band at 3pm.

Then in the evening there will be an outdoor party with a fish and chip shop provided by Our Plaice of Hagley, a bar and music, all starting at 7pm. The day will finish with a grand firework display at 9.45pm.

Andy Shepherd, from the Scouts, said: "There was a fish and chip shop in Romsley up until 1974.

“Going through old records from the early days of the Scout Group, we saw that the chip shop, which would have been opposite our current headquarters, was very popular in the village.

"That gave us the idea of bringing back the chip shop as part of our celebrations, just for one night."

He added: "The evening has been organised to both celebrate our Golden Jubilee and to thank the community for their amazing support over the last 50 years."

Romsley St. Kenelm’s Scout Group was founded in 1966 with a group of just 20 youngsters.

It now has 70 members, boys and girls aged from six to 17 years old, supported by a team of 18 voluntary leaders and helpers.
