TENNIS ace Jordanne Whiley is added more awards to her name when she picked up the Freedom of the Dudley borough on a visit to her old school in Halesowen today.

The Paralympian and three times Wimbledon champion popped into St Margaret’s at Hasbury CE Primary School, to be formally presented with her official Freedom scroll from the Mayor of Dudley.

Jordanne, aged 24, met pupils at their school assembly and later shared some of her insight and skills into the game, as well as staying for lunch and chatting to staff.

The wheelchair tennis sensation has won a string of world titles in a glittering career on the court including Wimbledon doubles, Paralympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016 as well as Australian, French and US Open titles.

In 2015 she was awarded the MBE for services to wheel chair tennis in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

The mayor Councillor Mohammed Hanif presented her with an official freedom scroll in front of the school and civic leaders.

He said: “Jordanne is an incredible inspiration to everyone who wants to succeed in sport and I am delighted we can celebrate all her achievements by presenting her with the Freedom of Dudley borough at her old school.

“We have a long legacy of sporting greats in the borough from Dorothy Round to Duncan Edwards, and now Jordanne Whiley.

“She has flown the flag for the borough around the world and we are enormously proud of all of her achievements. No doubt the children and staff at the school are as excited as we are to spend the day with her celebrating this latest accolade.”

In 2014 Jordanne became the first British athlete ever to win all four Grand Slams in one year and in 2015 she became The Sunday Times Sky Sports Disability Sportswoman of the Year. She has also played in nine World Cup events winning one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
