CASH-strapped Sandwell Council is fitting 5,000 streetlights with LED bulbs to save £20,000 a year on electricity bills.

The bulbs, which use 74 per cent less energy than standard bulbs, are being installed between now and next January.

When completed, around 9,500 streetlights with LED technology will have been installed in neighbourhoods across Sandwell over the past five years – saving £370,000 a year in energy costs.

The LED bulbs are designed to last up to 12 years, compared to the four years for the old technology lamps.

Cabinet member for highways and environment Councillor David Hosell said: “We have more than 30,000 street lights in Sandwell and the new LED bulbs are really helping to cut our electricity bill.

“Not only do we save money on the electricity they use, but they will save us money on maintenance in the long run as they can last up to 12 years.

“Any money we can save will help the council to continue to protect frontline services.”
