A Midlands pub is to get a new lease of life including a new name, its original one, care of a Birmingham beer institution.

Davenports Brewery, established in Birmingham in 1829, have taken on a traditional Victorian pub and restored it to its former glory, including the original name, The Bulls Head.

The pub, which has been known as the City Tavern since 1984, is only yards from the site of one of Davenports original breweries on Bath Row.

Constructed in 1901 and designed by James and Lister Lea, the ‘backstreet boozer’, has had a sympathetic refurbishment and reposition it’s offering. Sitting just behind the newly redeveloped Five Ways Island, it adds to a growing number of high profile changes in the area.

Being a Davenports pub, The Bulls Head will be offering traditional, award-winning cask beers made here in Birmingham and which have not been seen for many years, giving Brummie drinkers the chance to taste some local history. Combined with new craft beers, unique cocktails, coffee and a grilled food menu created to perfectly compliment the new range of drinks, the new offering marks a worthy upgrade to a venue with such a long and illustrious history.

The new pub will be an independent watering hole for the new Five Ways area and offer a true feast of Brum’s past and present.

The venue is being brought back to life by Davenports and headed up by Brummies Simon Key (Brand Director at Davenports) and Gerard Glenholmes-Walsh (General Manager).

Gerard, who was formerly General Manager at the Victoria on Station Street said: "After 9 years studying the hospitality trade in different cities around the country I returned to my hometown late last year in search of a new challenge.

"The opportunity to help bring Davenports, an iconic Midlands brand, back to the forefront lit a fire underneath me I hadn't felt in a long time. I knew I'd found that new home from home!”

Simon Key added: ”We are excited to give this great old venue a new lease of life. We have a foot firmly in the past with our historic revival cask beers but also want to offer a modern eclectic mix of local, national and international food and drink. You don’t have to be a beer expert to ennjoy the venue. We're all about having fun and experiencing the best food and drink the city has to offer.”

He added: ”We are soon to be opening brand new venues in the Jewellery Quarter and Moseley, which have been delayed, but we could not wait any longer to bring back an iconic name to the city centre."

The drinks offering will consist of Davenports own revival Birmingham Cask ales such as, Davenports original Bitter, Top Brew Deluxe, and Old Ale. These beers will be combined with new cocktails including Peaky Blinders Bulleit, Dares R.I.P beer cocktail and others
