A grot spot' in Cradley Heath could soon be re-developed as outline planning permission has been rubber-stamped for 21 apartments.

The derelict New Inn public house in Graingers Lane, with its unsightly overgrown land and boarded up windows, is on its way to being transformed by developers.

Residents and councillors has welcomed these new plans, which would see nine two-bedroom flats and 12 one-bedroom flats being built on the eyesore site.

The two and three storey apartments would also compromise 21 parking spaces within the centre of the site with amenity areas adjacent to the parking area.

Residents who live close to the site have supported the plans, as the derelict building is a target for arson attacks, and fly tipping has occurred on the surrounding land.

Cradley Heath and Old Hill Councillor Ann Shakleton has also welcomed these plans for the site, after previously naming and shaming the site as a grot spot' in the town, which was dragging down the appearance of the town.

She said: "The site has long been a sight for sore eyes and lots of residents have mentioned it to me in phone calls.

"The council is aware of the fact that there are quite a number of apartments being built in the area but we are keeping an eye on all the applications so there is a balance of different types to cater for the needs of people.

"The New Inn site is opposite Premier Stampings which emits a lot of noise, so it would seem that apartments would be best in this situation.

"I am anxious for action to be taken on all the grot spots in the town."
