SPORTY students and staff at a Halesowen primary school have been celebrating after picking up a prestigious award for their PE excellence.

St Margaret’s at Hasbury Primary School picked up one of the top prizes at the Black Country PE and Sports Premium awards after beating off tough competition from across the region.

The school claimed the ‘Physical Activity and Health Enhancing Initiative Award’ after demonstrating the impact of the sports premium money has had on pupils’ engagement in sport.

School bosses outlined how they had set up and run lunchtime clubs to engage a wide range of children in physical activities and developed intra-school competition with their ‘Sports Council’ by running various house tournaments – which were organised and run by the children themselves.

St Margaret’s was also praised for sending a number of teams to as many inter-school competitions and festivals as possible, as well as for their four-year collaboration with Halas Homes, where the school has been promoting physical activity.

The awards were announced at the recent Sport Premium Conference, with the school now going up against other schools in the West Midlands later in the summer term.

Winners of these awards will then proceed to the national finals taking place in September.
