YOUNG footballers in Halesowen have been scoring donations – as well as goals – to help support a regional children’s hospice.

The Halesowen Town Colts West U14s have been carrying out a number fundraising activities in aid of Acorns, while also printing the charity’s logos on their shirts for the upcoming season.

The youngsters first began fundraising for Acorns back in December 2017 when they completed a bag pack – initially to raise funds for the team.

But it was at this point when the players decided it would be nice to give some of the money they raised to a local charity.

Andrew Iezzi, whose son Lewis plays for the side, said: “After careful consideration they decided to reach out to Acorns and arranged with the charity to visit their hospice in Selly Oak to handover lots of lovely toys and gifts.

“During their visit the team were kindly shown round by Lyndsay the centre manager who gave them a tour around the hospice and explain a little more about the work Acorns did.

“After visiting the centre and learning more, the team were keen to see if they could help some more.”

With the 2018/2019 season approaching, the players realised they would need new kit and saw this as a great opportunity to continue their relationship with the hospice, and after contacting Acorns again, the charity set up a series of sponsored events for the team to complete throughout July.

The players successfully completed the 5k Halesowen Family Fun Run, a 2k assault course at Warped in Wolverhampton and took part in a 13k walk from Leasowes High School – where the team train – to Churchill and Blakedown Sports and Recreation Centre where they play their home games.

In addition to self-funding their new shirts donning the logo of the charity, the players have also raised £650 for Acorns.

Andrew added: “The team are hoping to again get back over to Selly Oak to present Acorns with a cheque.”
