AN OLDBURY businessman is to be put forward for the rare honour of freeman of Sandwell Borough.

David Manners could join celebrities such as comedian Frank Skinner and actors Josie Lawrence and Julie Walters if his nomination is accepted by councillors.

A well known figure in the borough, he has been selling British car parts from his multi-million business near Birchley Island for the last 26 years.

Councillor Bill Gavan has put forward the nomination, saying Mr Manners, who was born in Smethwick, has been an exemplary employer for over 40 years who has donated significant amounts of money to local charities.

The councillor’s nomination stated Mr Manners has shown exceptional innovation and entrepreneurship, delivering significant economic growth and prosperity while he exemplifies selflessness and sustained commitment to the community through charitable deeds.

If accepted, the businessman will join former Speaker of the House of Commons, Baroness Boothroyd of Sandwell, footballer Cyrille Regis and charity fundraiser 'Blind Dave' Heeley who are among only 14 recipients of the honour.

Cllr Gavan said that in his business and private life Mr Manners had made a significant contribution to Sandwell.

“Over the years and often behind the scenes, he has contributed to many charities such as hospices, where he spent £10,000 on a classic car which was then raffled off to raise funds,” he said.

“He has also bought toys for children in domestic violence refuges at Christmas, contributed to dementia charities and more often than not, done it without seeking publicity.

“In business, he always tries to buy British and if there’s a product he can’t buy here he’ll import it and then get it manufactured locally and he makes sure he  looks after his workforce, including retired employees.”

His nomination for Freeman of Sandwell will now go a full meeting of the council for formal ratification.
