A HISTORIC Quinton church will be open to the public this weekend as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.

Christ Church, built in the 1840s, will open its doors on Friday (September 7), Saturday (September 8) and Sunday (September 9) from 2pm until 5pm, with the ‘Old Burial Ground’ opening at the same time.

Quinton's parish church and the burial ground will also open the following weekend.

Peter Sherwen, on behalf of Christ Church The Quinton, said: “Heritage Open Days are happening over two weekends for the first time.

“Christ Church is a beautiful honey coloured sandstone church built in ‘Early English’ style. There are some excellent Victorian stained glass windows as well as some good 20th century ones.

“Many have been repaired, re-leaded or cleaned recently so are looking good.

“There are some Commonwealth War Graves here as well as a monument to Alexander Macomb Chance, one of the famous Chance Brothers of Smethwick and Oldbury.

“One side is a conservation area. It is being developed with the help of the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust as a traditional hay meadow.”
