A NEW cemetery opposite Rowley Regis Crematorium is to be discussed by Sandwell Council’s planning committee next week.
The scheme would use green space at the rear of homes on Powke Lane to create a new graveyard to replace existing facilities, which are becoming crowded.
Planning officers have said: “The current application is to change the use of part of Powke Lane open space to a cemetery and will include site remediation works, widening of the existing access of Powke Lane, erection of an office building with toilets and an operation yard, creation of a car park and associated works including CCTV, lighting and landscaping.”
They are recommending members of the committee visit the site to help them decide whether it should be approved.
It is one of two new cemeteries in Sandwell, which council officials say will ensure there is “sufficient new burial space” for many years to come.
A full report on the plans will be put to councillors at their meeting in early October.
