A MUSIC group in Stourbridge for young people with challenging circumstances has several spaces left for youngsters across the Dudley borough.

Base Studios, in Rufford Road on the Gainsborough Industrial Estate, has set up the ‘Saturday Studio’ programme with support from Youth Music to help disadvantaged youngsters access musical instruments.

The weekend group offers up to 20 young people the chance to learn and progress with musical instruments such as guitar, bass, keyboard, drums as well as the opportunity to develop vocals.

Sarah Evans, of Base Studios, said: “Even if they have never picked up an instrument, just by teaching them little bits, hopefully they can get a band together with others they meet here.

“There will be performances at the end of the phases. We are hoping that all the students who come along will be able to complete the Bronze Art Award which is a recognised Level 1 qualification.”

The group runs during term time each Saturday from 10am-1pm, with four music facilitators on hand, and no prior musical experience is necessary.

The first phase is currently under way for ‘looked-after’ children aged 13-18 but there are still some spaces left and the group is hoping to get a few bands together in the next few weeks.

The second phase starts in January 2019 and is for those aged 13-24 who are not in education, training or employment.

The final phase will start after Easter 2019 and is for anyone in the Dudley borough aged 13-24 who might have other challenging circumstances, such as financial constraints or learning issues.
