RESIDENTS can learn how to protect themselves from fraud and scams at a safety event this week.

More than £3million is lost to financial criminals in Dudley borough alone every year, with often the most vulnerable and lonely residents being the prime target.

Amounts from small sums to people’s entire life savings can be taken.

To tackle this, a free fraud and scams awareness event will be held on Tuesday February 26 at The Store House, Albion Street, Brierley Hill, to teach people how to spot the warning signs and help prevent them becoming a victim of fraud, scams and rogue traders.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for communities, said: "This kind of criminal activity is on the rise, not just here in Dudley but across the country. It’s unacceptable and we will do all we can to prevent it.

"These fraudsters are skilled at persuading and pressuring people. If in doubt, take your time and don’t be afraid to check they are genuine.

“We work closely with the police to tackle this problem and since setting up our own scams unit we have been able to recover thousands of pounds for victims in the borough.”

Dudley Trading Standards, West Midlands Police and the Illegal Money Lending Team will be on hand to give advice, while trading standards will be able to discuss any concerns with individuals at the free event.
