A Cradley councillor has come under fire for his home-made signs urging people to snap flytippers on camera.

Councillor Richard Body put up DIY signs on Wynall Lane South and Foxcote Lane to promote the Together We Can scheme which encourages people to take images of wrongdoing and report it on a Dudley Council web page.

Councillor Body came up with the idea for the scheme after getting fed up of people not being prosecuted for littering and other offences.

But his signs have not gone down well with everyone.

Cradley Residents' Association chairman Chris Legiewicz said: "I was contacted by a lady via the residents' association saying when she took her daughter to beavers she drove past one of the signs and asked what a tosser was.

"It's not very good is it coming from a councillor?

"You're not allowed to just make your own signs and put them up.

"There are fines for this."

But councillor Body said they had gone down well.

He said: "I have had so many calls and e mails and text messages in support.

"Ninety nine point nine per cent of people have been supportive.

"People like me are sick and tired of people's attitudes - those who have no regard whatsoever for the community they live in.

"This has been going on for years - I have collected 120 bags of rubbish over the years on my own.

"It's never ending and there's no chance of them getting caught.

"They do it all the time - I wish there was another way - but there's not it has to be people who have dash cams or other devices to catch them.

"Anything that makes people think - if it's amusing or hard hitting - it's fine."

Cllr Body said he was going to take the signs down today (Thursday) but said he couldn't promise he wouldn't put them up again in the future.

Alan Lunt, deputy chief executive at Dudley Council, said: “Together we can is a borough wide campaign to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, which we hope will gather the support of all 72 members of the council as well as our local communities.

"Whilst we do appreciate the support of councillor Body, the posters have been produced without the endorsement of the council.

"We will review the content of the posters and work with councillor Body to make the campaign a positive one.”
