A MAN who was given life support after being pulled from a canal in Halesowen is fighting for his life in hospital today (Monday).

Police are appealing for the public's help in identifying the drowning man who bystanders pulled from the no.2 canal near Coombs Road, at around 4.46pm yesterday (Sunday).

Officers said the middle-aged man was spotted by a member of the public close to the entrance of Gorsty Hill tunnel.

The ambulance service gave him life support at the scene and he was taken to the Q.E hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Inspector Lee Evans from Brierley Hill response team, said: “We are trying to find out who this man is and how he came to be in the water.

"At this stage, there does not appear to be any obvious suspicious circumstances.

“We are appealing to anyone who can help us to identify him. "He is a white, middle-aged man, with receding, swept back greying brown hair and sideburns.

"He was found wearing a red T-shirt, black jeans, a black leather jacket and black ankle boots.

"If you recognise this description, please give us a call.”

The Midlands Air Ambulance was called to the incident.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to the no.2 canal, near a tunnel, at 4.46pm to reports of someone in the water.

"He had been been dragged out.

"We sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and the Hazardous Area Response Team, due to the incident being on a canal tow path.

"The man received advanced life support at the scene and was taken on blue lights by ambulance to the Q.E hospital."
