OVER 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for greater road safety measures at a busy Stourbridge crossing.
1,350 people signed the petition, both online and on paper, calling for Dudley Council to improve road safety at Oldswinford Cross at the junction of Glasshouse Hill, Hagley Road and Heath Lane.
The petition was launched in April and was handed in to Dudley Council by campaigners Andrew Tromans and Lorna O'Dowd on June 3.
Andrew Tromans, Stourbridge Labour campaigner who started the petition said: “It has been a real privilege to work with community activists on this issue and see people power in action. It clear by the amount of support that the petition has garnered that improving safety at Oldswinford Cross is real priority for residents.
"I am encouraged by Dudley Council’s response to the petition so far and look forward to see what proposals they come forward with.”
Paul Kilbride, headteacher at Oldswinford Hospital School, said: "OSH is completely behind this all-important local initiative. It’s becoming critical that we work together to have our Council recognise just how pressing this issue now is.
"School children, young families, the elderly and local shop keepers and their employees are all in favour of improved road safety at Oldswinford Cross - and pedestrian welfare - being moved higher up the agenda.’
Supporters of the petition have now organised a public meeting to discuss the issue which will take place on Friday June 7 at 7pm at the Oldswinford Hospital School.
