STAFF at a Wollaston pub are celebrating after being voted the best sports bar in the Midlands.

The Britannia Sports Bar, in Wollaston High Street, beat off 600 other entrants to take home the accolade from Enterprise.

The sports bar was judged on the ease of viewing for punters, food availability, drinks offers and ambience.

Celebrating the news, Ted Etheridge, whose son Wayne runs the pub and who has been involved with the bar for the past ten years, said: "It's fantastic, we're over the moon, beating 600 other entrants is no mean feat."

Last year 1,000 football fans watched the World Cup in the Wollaston pub, which has 13 screens to show all the latest sporting action.

Ted added: "The days are long gone where you could open the doors and expect people to come in.

"The win involves lots of hard work looking after our customers and their needs."

The pub has often played host to an array of local sports stars, including Steve Bull, Bob Taylor and the European cup winning Aston Villa team.
