THE late uncle of Dudley footballing legend Duncan Edwards is to be added to the town's war memorial.
The name of Private Sidney Edwards will become the 724th name to be carved on Dudley's World War I memorial in Priory Street on Wednesday (September 11).
Private Edwards served in the 9th Worcester Battalion and was killed in 1917 in Kut-al-Amara, Mesopotamia, now part of modern Iraq.
Information about his tragic death was discovered during a project at Dudley Archives by World War I researcher James Hadley and David Barratt, who was working on the family tree of Duncan Edwards.
Sidney Edwards’ granddaughter, Jacqueline Brazier, said: ‘‘It will be a very proud day for our family to see our grandfather’s name on the memorial.
“I would like to thank Dudley Council for their support as well as David and James for all of their hard work.”
