SHELL Corner will fall silent next month as part of its second remembrance day event since the historic shell was returned to its rightful home.

The remembrance service, at the shell on the corner of Maple Road and Long Lane, will be on Friday November 8 and starts at 7pm.

It will be led by Blackheath and Oldbury British Legions.

A war-time sing-along will kick off at 6.30pm featuring It's a Long Way to Tipperary, Pack Up Your Troubles, Roll Out The Barrel, White Cliffs of Dover, Land of Hope and Glory and We'll Meet Again at a pre-event led by veteran Frank Haynes.

Shell Corner was named after the artillery shell memorial - created as a tribute to those who died during World War One.

The shell went missing in the 70s when there was a revamp of the road network.

A replacement shell was donated by the army and the memorial was restored to its rightful home last year after a campaign by former councillor Stuart Henley.

Once the shell was back Stuart organised a remembrance event with the help of The British Legion.

He is hoping this year's event will be even more successful.

Stuart said: "Last year's event was a huge success despite the heavy rain and wind, more than 100 visitors came to remember.

"This year's event is getting a lot of interest from local businesses, groups and residents.

"So far around 30 wreaths have been ordered to be laid.

"I would like to invite everyone, if you are a local resident, veteran, run a community group, school etc please come along and remember those who have served and those serving now."

Anyone who wants to order a wreath can contact Stuart at hn-streetwatch@outlook.com or message him on Facebook.

They cost £25 each with funds going to the British Legion.
