WORK has begun on the seventh Aldi in Bolton.

The popular German giant was given planning permission for the site on the corner of Manchester Road and Raikes Lane in December 2016.

Development on the site was ordered to begin within three years from the date that permission was granted, and three years later the build is well underway.

The new store is due to open sometime this year, although a firm date has not yet been set.

Cllr Mohammed Ayub said: “I have no problem with it, there have been some concerns about traffic but the junction has been improved and the work is already complete on that so I don’t think traffic will be a problem.

“It’s something to look forward to, it might attract more shoppers from Farnworth and across the network.

“The store will also create some new jobs and I’m hoping they’ll go to people in the area.”

There are already two Aldi stores on the edge of the town centre, in Trinity Street and Higher Bridge Street.

Four more stores are currently open in Breightmet, Horwich, Over Hulton, and Westhoughton.

Aldi also has a distribution centre in Logistics North, the industrial estate in Over Hulton.

In February last year, the brand opened their latest store in Westhoughton.

Planning permission for the former Glebe Mill site off Bolton Road was granted just six months before the Manchester Road site was approved.

Olympic bronze gymnast Kristian Thomas was at the grand opening last year, where the first 30 customers were given a free bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The brand submitted a planning application to Bolton Council to put up signs for the new store at the time of the latest opening, which was granted by town hall planners.

It is not yet known what the discount supermarket will do to celebrate the opening of this store or when construction is set to finish.
