A HARD-working volunteer at Russells Hall Hospital was given a heartwarming surprise by TV choirmaster Gareth Malone on The One Show.

Roger Brown featured on the BBC show on Thursday night (May 28) where his work as a volunteer at the Dudley hospital was celebrated as part of the programme's 'Big Thank You' segment.

Presenter Alex Jones appeared on a screen at the hospital to let Roger know how much his work is appreciated before TV choirmaster Gareth Malone introduced a special performance from members of the hospital choir by video link in dedication to Roger.

Staff, friends and choir members appeared on video to share their love and thanks for Roger, who delivers personal items to patients from their loved ones, sings to entertain people in queues and volunteers at Black Country Foodbank.

Roger's nominator Reverend Lyn Rowson said: "He is so humble about it and you would never know all the work he does."

Brian Bracher from Black Country Food Bank added: "In these uncertain times Roger epitomises all that is good in this world."

A tearful Roger told the One Show "I'm absolutely overwhelmed, this is all part of the church, it makes a better person of me. So many people need help and if you're there to help it gives you a great feeling inside.

"This is what life is all about, it's caring for other people."

The episode is available to watch in full on the BBC iPlayer.
