SANDWELL has moved closer to a local lockdown as the Black Country borough recorded yet another workplace outbreak.

The latest cases have lead to Dr Lisa McNally issuing a blunt reminder that Covid-19 kills after Cape HIll Asda supermarket reported eight new infections.

The borough, which includes Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis and Oldbury,  remains just short of the ultimate intervention level when councils can impose a lockdown closing shops, businesses, cancelling public events and impose restrictions on people meeting outside of their homes.

The local director of public health (pictured below) said: “Local people in Smethwick are reminded that this virus can be fatal."

Commenting on the latest outbreak,  Dr McNally added: “The current high infection rates in Smethwick mean that all businesses need to be especially careful to maintain social distancing on their premises and ensure face coverings are worn.

“We are strongly advising everyone to avoid crowds and social gatherings as much as possible right now.

“This is a serious situation and we all need to be very careful.”

A spokesperson for Asda said the company immediately informed health bosses when it became aware of the cases. The store remains open.

“The safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority.

“We have introduced extensive measures across all our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular deep cleaning.”

The outbreak was revealed only hours after Sandwell moved closer to a lockdown.

Public Health England data show infections have increased to 20.2 per 100,000 people – a small increase on the previous week.

Smethwick, St Paul’s and Soho and Victoria wards have recorded the highest increases since July and remain a hot spot for Covid-19.

Sandwell has been declared an area of enhanced support as it moved up a local authority watch-list of boroughs with high infection rates.
