HEREFORD'S "ancient and special connection" with the apple is being celebrated as apple trees are planted in the city.

As part of a project led by the Hereford Business Improvement District (BID), the overgrown area between the police station in Bath Street and Bastion Mews has been spruced up.

The project also linked into other campaigns to celebrate the city’s association with the apple, Hereford BID chief executive Mike Truelove said.

Hereford Clean Up Group, Hereford in Bloom, Herefordshire Council contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places and Frank P Matthews Tree Shop of Tenbury Wells have also been involved.

By the end of September, crab apple trees will be planted by Hereford BID and the city's mayor coun Kath Hey.
