Biggleswade Town 0 Bromsgrove Sporting 1 (Luke Ward 83')

Report by Max Banner

Bromsgrove Sporting notched up their first league win of the season, with a 1-0 victory at Biggleswade Town on Saturday afternoon.

Debutant Luke Ward scored the game's only goal, volleying the ball home at the far post from a corner seven minutes from time.

Sporting got off to a slow start, with the home side dominating the play; Tremayne Charles had a couple of early chances, whilst Scott Davies had a 12th minute free kick, from which Fabio Lopes put the rebound over the bar.

The lively Lopes had a further opportunity to break the deadlock 10 minutes from the half time whistle, but he saw his low shot saved well by Daniel Platt.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half saw Sporting grow into the game more, with Chris Lait and Charlie Dowd missing the target with attempts from range, whilst Lait and Courtney Richards both found the net but were judged to be offside in the process.

Lopes and Jonathan Giles had shots from close range for the Waders but were unable to test Platt. They were made to pay for the lack of a clinical edge in front of goal, as the Rouslers netted what proved to be the winner in the 83rd minute.

Lait whipped a corner into the box, which was wilfully booted home by Ward at the back post, sending the travelling Sporting faithful into raptures of joy.

Sporting signed 19 year-old defender Luke Ward from Shrewsbury Town last week.

Manager Bren Kelly commented on the addition: “Luke is a strong dominant centre back, who will offer good balance to the squad.

“He’s an excellent talent, who definitely has the potential to get back playing in the Football League, so I’m delighted he has signed.

“Of course, he had offers, like all good footballers, but I’m pleased he is a Sporting player now."

There is no match for Sporting's first team this Saturday as the date was reserved for the next round on the FA Cup.

There is however a league match at the Victoria Ground on Tuesday 6th October at 7-45 pm when Sporting host Tamworth.

The number of spectators allowed into the ground is still limited to 600 and demand is expected to be high to tickets for this game will be sold on-line via the Sporting web site www.bromsgrovesporting.co.uk.

The ladies' match against Hereford Women due to be played next Sunday 4th October has had to be postponed as work is being being done on the pitch and will not be completed in time for them to play.

The over-35s Sporting Veterans match due to be played on the Sunday morning is also cancelled.
