POLICE have urged people to be vigilant after a carjacking in Halesowen.

The terrifying incident in Belgrave Road was reported today (Tuesday October 27) but happened on Sunday (October 25) between 8.20pm and 8.36pm near the shops on Shell Circle.

Police say a man approached the vehicle, tapped on the window and asked for directions and when the motorist said they were unable to provide directions as they did not know the area the offender opened the door, pulled the driver out of the vehicle and made off with it.

Mo Khan, Dudley Partnership Team, Engagement and Consultation Officer at West Midlands Police, said: "We are working hard to prevent crimes of this nature and to deal with the perpetrators."

To avoid falling victim to this type of crime motorists are urged to:

• Park in well-lit areas

• Be aware of surroundings

• Equip their car with an anti-theft device

• Lock doors while driving

• Avoid driving alone at night when possible

• Avoid stopping for apparently stranded strangers along the road
