MORE than 300 pupils and staff were evacuated from an Oldbury primary school today after reports of a possible chemical incident.

A 999 call was made reporting a chemical-type smell at Christ Church Primary School, in Albert Street, just after 10am today (Wednesday November 4).

It's the second incident of this type at the school this month - as the same thing happened on October 5.

The fire service and medics attended and one woman was assessed by medics at the scene.

Children and staff were evacuated from the building and have now been allowed back in.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that an investigation was underway to “establish the source of the smell”.

He said: "We were called at 10.04am to reports of a strong chemical-type smell.

"We sent fire engines from Oldbury and West Bromwich as well as a specialist team.

"Staff and pupils have been allowed back in as investigations continue into the source of the smell, which is affecting a small area."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to Christ Church C of E Primary School on Albert Street in Oldbury.

"We sent our hazardous area response team and a paramedic officer.

“We assessed one patient, a woman, who was discharged at the scene.”

Michaela Chapman, head teacher at Christ Church Primary School, said: “We evacuated staff and pupils as a precaution this morning when the smell was noticed in a small area within the school.

“We would like to thank the emergency services for attending and providing support. Staff and pupils were able to come back into school following the fire service’s advice.

“The fire service and local authority are helping us to investigate the source of the smell.”
