A PETITION calling for safety measures at a "dangerous" Halesowen junction has been handed in to Dudley Council.

More than 40 residents who live near Shelton Lane have called for action after crashes at its junction with Belle Vale.

They want a mirror installed to improve visibility alongside other road safety measures’ to slow motorists down.

Andrew Tromans, Labour Party Candidate for Belle Vale, who started the petition, said an analysis of road safety using the website CrashMap, which collates road accident data from across the UK, showed that two accidents occurred at the junction of Belle and Shelton Lane between August 2018 and August 2019.

Andrew (pictured below) said the collisions involved multiple vehicles but fortunately were not fatal.

He said: “Residents are calling out for something to be done about the junction between Shelton Lane and Belle Vale and more generally to reduce speeds in the area.

"I started the petition to try to give local people a voice and I now hope that Dudley Council will listen and take swift action before a tragedy occurs."

Local resident, Fady Jadayel, who lives close to the junction has joined calls for action.

He said “It is high-time that something was done.

"You only have to observe the traffic on this junction for a few minutes to see that it is dangerous.”

When signing the petition, a resident of Shelton Lane commented: “We have lived on Shelton Lane for 47 years, and in that time it has transformed from a quiet lane into a rat race.

"We are frightened to turn right out of Shelton Lane because of the speed of the traffic travelling along Belle Vale.

"You take your life in your hands to turn that way.

"Something needs to be done to slow traffic down”

Mr Tromans said the council had sent him an acknowledgement of the petition which stated: “We undertake a highway safety review of the whole borough every year to inform our future local safety scheme programmes.

"The above junctions will be included in our review that will take place in the next few months.”

Dudley Council has been contacted for comment.
