POLICE have been out cracking down on speeding motorists in Halesowen - with a string of other Speedwatch patrols in the pipeline.

Officers from the Halesowen neighbourhood policing were on Long Lane yesterday (Sunday May 16) to ensure drivers were sticking to the limit.

They tweeted: "Pcso Green and Bilsby have been conducting speed enforcement across the Halesowen North area. #drivesafe."

Halesowen North councillor Joe Roberts welcomed the move saying that Community Speedwatch patrols would soon be held in Narrow Lane, Woodbury Road and Greenhill Road, which have been identified as speeding hotspots.

He said: "Great to have the local police on Long Lane!

"Speeding on Long Lane is something that all the councillors have discussed with the police.

"Community Speed watch/ local police will be visiting other speeding hotspots like Narrow Lane, Woodbury road, Greenhill Road and other local roads very soon, all with the aim in making our local roads safer!"

The police's tweet on the initiative prompted a string of responses with people commented that officers should target Gower Road, Huntingtree Road "which some people treat like a race track", Howley Grange Road, Spies Lane, Kent Road and Carters Lane.

One person said: "It's pretty bad on Spies Lane, they drive so fast I'm frightened to walk my dog sometimes, they do not care one little bit about the speed limit."

On Community Speedwatch patrols motorists who are doing 35mph and above in a 30mph limit and 46mph and above in a 40mph limit, are sent warning letters by the police.

A police officer or PCSO has to be present when the speed gun is used.

In cases where warning letters are blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated, enforcement and prosecution follow.
