KIDDERMINSTER parents are set to get a new crossing outside their children's school following a successful campaign.

Concerned parents at Franche Community Primary School said they have seen several near misses with people crossing the Habberley Road, near to the junction with St John's Avenue and Manor Avenue, and claim the poor visibility caused by a bend in the road is an "accident waiting to happen".

A petition was launched last year to improve visibility on the road to get a new crossing installed "before someone is hurt or killed".

The campaign was started by parent Erin Galloway and supported by District councillor and Franche Primary School parent Anna L’Huillier.

Now, Worcestershire County Council has listened to parents and will developing a new crossing with lining and signage.

A council spokesperson said: "The crossing will be moved further along Habberley Road, adjacent to No. 36 Manor Avenue and No. 2 Trimpley Drive, again with dropped kerbs and tactile paving.

To increase the visibility for users on the Trimpley Drive side, a Rediweld build-out will be installed. This will also serve to narrow the carriageway, which can cause a reduction in traffic speeds.

The Rediweld RediPave islands are made from recycled materials and are durable and quick to install.

"Our contractor, Ringway will undertake the works under traffic signal control to protect both the workforce and the Public.

"Rediweld will then follow on to install the build-out islands. We are looking to undertake the works before Christmas, potentially in November.”

District councillor Anna L’Huillier said: "It's a real win for us.

"It's exactly what we wanted. Something in to prevent an accident and not something put in because of an accident.

"To see that they're doing anything to improve it is great news and is going to help a lot of people."
