CANNABIS plants and equipment to cultivate drugs were seized after a severe blaze at a flat above a Rowley Regis shop, it has now been confirmed.

Fire crews from Haden Cross, Ward End and Handsworth were alerted to the incident in Long Lane just before 11am this morning (Monday November 22).

The fire was contained to the flat but there was smoke damage to the entire property, West Midlands Fire Service said on Twitter.

West Midlands Police said "30 young cannabis plants were found in the flat" which was located above a electrical repair outlet/storage facility for white goods and a spokesman said an investigation had been launched, adding: "The illegal drugs will be destroyed and growing equipment recycled."

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service told the News the incident had seen some 20 firefighters deployed after alerts came through at 10.53am and he added: "The fire is believed to have started accidentally and involved an electric heater."
