A Halesowen sports and social club which received a one star hygiene rating is delighted after a reinspection gave it a top five star rating.

Coombs Wood Sports and Social Club on Stewarts Road was given the five star rating on January 21, the Food Standards Agency’s website shows.

The club was gutted when it was handed a one star rating on November 17 due to an issue with paperwork regarding allergies.

Club steward Dawn Bubb said she was delighted with the five star rating, just in time for its beer festival which kicks off on Thursday (January 27) and runs until Saturday (January 29).

She said: "We feel fabulous.

"It was all down to the new national Natasha's Law to do with nut allergies. What we didn't realise was that there was a 100-page document to fill in.

"I think to give us a one star rating was very unfair as it wasn't to do with hygiene.

"They did a thorough check and gave us a glowing five star rating just in time for our beer festival, which is great."

If stocks have not run dry on Saturday the beer festival could continue on Sunday.

The festival didn't take place last year due to covid.

Dawn said: "There will be a wide range of cask ales and ciders as well as street food and entertainment.

"It is a fun event for the whole family with good beers, food and music.

"You don't have to be a member to come along and entry is free."

A hygiene rating of 0 means urgent improvement is required; 1 means "major improvement is necessary."

A 2 star rating means "some improvement is necessary", while 3 star means "hygiene standards are generally satisfactory" and 4 star means "hygiene standards are good."

A 5 star rating means "hygiene standards are very good."
