B&Q in Halesowen was evacuated and firefighters were called to the store.
Firefighters from Haden Cross station in Cradley Heath were called to the DIY superstore on Mucklow Hill at 6.45pm yesterday (Monday May 23).
Customers were evacuated while they carried out checks.
It is believed the false alarm could have been caused by an electric heater, which firefighters quickly isolated after arriving.
An alarm had gone off in a first floor lecture room.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The incident that took place at B&Q yesterday was a false alarm.
"A crew from Haden Cross fire station attended and carried out checks with a thermal imaging camera.
"The store was evacuated prior to our arrival."
