TWO volunteer police officers have been honoured for their efforts to try to save a teenager’s life while facing danger themselves.

Special Constables Luke Adams and Meadow Rickards were on patrol in Dudley Road East, Tividale, when they were stopped by a taxi driver whose passenger, Kimani Martin, aged 18, had just been shot in the early hours of June 20, 2021.

Despite not knowing the gunman was still in the area, the brave pair got to work.

Luke, a trained medic in his day job, removed Kimani from the taxi and provided first aid, trying to maintain the critically injured teen’s airway while giving calm instructions to colleagues on how to stop the bleeding and requesting specific medical help to try to give Kimani the best chance of survival.

Meanwhile, Meadow talked to key witnesses and preserved evidence.

Once paramedics arrived on the scene, Luke gave a comprehensive handover and continued to help.

Kimani was taken to hospital where doctors confirmed he had been shot at close range by a shotgun but he later died of his injuries.

West Midlands Police said both officers did their best for the teenager. They were credited for remaining calm under extreme pressure, caring for Kimani and trying to give him the best possible chance of survival.

Chief Constable Sir David Thompson presented Luke with a Royal Humane Society parchment ward and a Chief Constable’s Commendation Award on May 17 and Meadow was presented with a Chief Constable’s Award.

Three men have since been convicted over the killing - after police linked them to the fatal shooting following the collation of CCTV, ring doorbell and phone record evidence by homicide detectives.
