A THIEF stole DVDs two girls were selling from outside their homes to raise money for ice-creams in their summer holiday.

Tillie and Hattie Denham, aged nine and seven, were selling their old DVDs to raise pocket money in Bloomfield Road, in St John's, under the supervision of their parents.

Mum, Rebecca Denham, said a man in a burgundy KIA drove past and stole at least 20 of the films without paying before speeding off, on Tuesday, August 2.

She said: "To steal DVDs from a children's pocket money sale is incredibly sad. The kids were so disappointed.

"At such a young age, it is so hard to explain to them why anyone would want to steal from them.

"We had to explain that not everyone in the world is nice which is a tough message to convey to young kids.

"It just put a real downer on what should have been a nice day."

The girls had made a stand with an honesty box at the end of the drive for people to leave their money, with DVDs listed as £1 each.

Mrs Denham said: "We were inside the house and could see a few people walking past and stopping for a look before carrying on with their day.

"At about 10.30am, I saw the man stop his car and pick up some of the films before getting in his car and quickly driving off.

"I thought it was strange how quickly he drove away, and when the girls went to check the box, at least half of the films were gone in a box of 40 DVDs and no money was left."

After the incident, Rebecca took the rest of the films inside and opted to sell them on Facebook Marketplace instead.

Despite the theft, the girls have kept their heads up and are feeling a lot better now.

Rebecca said: " They were very upset at the time but they are doing ok now.

"The community has also been really kind around us which is so lovely to see."
