THE Mayor of Dudley has welcomed plans for Dudley Council to fly the Jamaican flag at the Council House in Dudley this weekend.
The flag will be flown from the Priory Road building from this evening (Friday August 5) in celebration of Jamaican Independence Day and as part of the council’s equality strategy, which was agreed in March.
The strategy sets out the local authority’s vision for putting equality at the heart of everything it does and reflects findings from an independent review into the council’s provision for equalities.
Councillor Sue Greenaway, The Mayor of Dudley, said: "We are proud to see the flag being raised at the Council House today to mark Jamaican Independence Day.
"This weekend marks 60 years since Jamaica was granted independence from the UK on August 6, 1962.
"Our equality strategy pledges a greater focus towards public equality duties as a service provider, an employer and as a hub for community leaders and we are pleased to fly the flag this weekend as a part of our commitment."
The flag will be flown until Monday August 8.
