AN area of grassland caught fire in Oldbury, leaving smoke still rising from the scene this morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene in Dudley Road, Oldbury, just after 7pm yesterday (Tuesday August 9).

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said "several small heat and fire pockets were found within the area", although it was not yet clear what caused the blaze.

Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera, a hose reel jet and "beaters" to tackle the flames.

WMFS said the blaze was out by 9.30pm, however follow-up visits are taking place this morning.

Oldbury Fire Station tweeted today: "6am Oldbury beautiful misty morning!

"Unfortunately the mist is a hazy smoke layer, crews have been working here for 4 periods now and will need to continue for some time.

"Please be extra careful with barbecues cigarettes etc"
