A corner of Rowley Regis is set to be transformed by a new £15,000 public artwork.

Community arts organistions Multistory and Planet Art are set to create a permanent sculpture trail celebrating the area's heritage on Rowley Hill, just off East Avenue.

Titled Tales of Rowley, the trail will encompass a series of sculptures made from Rowley Rag, cast iron and feature scenes of mining, nail making, quarrying and chainmaking.

The design was voted for by more than 250 residents at a two-day event at Haden Hill House in March.

Rich Franks, project manager at Multistory, said: "The response to all of the designs was very positive and we are delighted so many residents cast their vote.

"We are all looking forward to seeing the sculpture trail take shape."

The trail will lead visitors to a landcaped open space offering fantastic views of the Black Country and could be installed by mid-summer.

Youngsters from Corngreaves Primary school and St Michael's C of E High school have been among the groups who helped develop ideas for the design. The project is part of a number of Telling Tales schemes which have been introduced in Sandwell over the last year.

Councillor Barbara Price, chair of Rowley Regis Town Committee, said the trail would be important for the town.

Cllr Price said: "We look forward the installation being completed, after when we will take responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the trail."
