Often referred to by the Brummies as the German Market, this festive annual staple is back in action after a year’s postponement.

Running since 2001, the Christmas Market reopened on the 3rd of November and the market, bedazzled with Christmas lights and surrounded with wooden grottos, will be running until the 23rd of December.

Whilst it’s best during the evening, it’s still packed in the afternoon and filled with Christmas joy.

There’s the aroma of grilled frankfurters and caramelised onions, laced with the sweeter aroma of sugary doughnuts and cinnamon churros. Alongside the tempting treats, there are also stalls selling hundreds of different novelty trinkets from handmade baubles to an array of crystals.

With the first record of a Christmas market dating back 1393, well-known in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin to name a few cities, the community atmosphere is still very much intact. The lights of the carousel glow as you pass by families huddling around a tray of fried potatoes and mushrooms or students glugging down pints of German beer or Glühwein- also known as mulled wine. Whilst the original markets would have been held in the Church square, these stalls are situated around Victoria Square, New Street, Chamberlain Square and Centenary Square, with live music including lots of Christmas tracks.

Whether you visit because of the delicious food, the atmosphere or merely the aesthetic pictures you can take, it's definitely worth a visit- you still have over a month left!
