PLANS to build homes on the site of the former Pheasant pub in Smethwick have been submitted to Sandwell Council.

A developer wants to build an apartment block and six houses on the empty site on Abbey Road.

The well-known pub was flattened after it was deemed "structurally unsafe."

Plans for homes are from Birmingham-based Woodbourne Group.

The homes would be three-bedroom semis fronting onto Abbey Road and the apartment block would house nine two-bed flats and two one-bed flats.

A design and access statement states: "The houses and apartment building replace the former pub building which has now been demolished, re-defining the streetscape.

"There is an opportunity to create a building of importance to face the junction."

There would be 11 parking spaces for the apartment building as well as three visitor spaces.

Each house has two parking spaces at the rear of their garden. Noes to planners state: "The parking spaces will be controlled by lockable fold down bollards, to stop the apartment residents using the spaces."

They go on: "The development will have a positive impact on the site and the surrounding area, creating a quality and design benchmark for the locality."

The site behind the former pub was granted planning permission for 14, three-bedroom two-storey family houses in January 2020.
