A number of community-spirited residents from across the West Midlands have been recognised in the New Year's Honours List 2023. 

The awards highlight those across the country who have gone above and beyond in services to the community and the wider public. 

This year’s list includes a total of 1,227 recipients with 13.8 per cent coming from an ethnic minority background and 48 per cent being women.

Recipients in the region include Baldev Parkash Bhardwaj who has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the community in Oldbury. 

Philip John Loach QFSM, lately Chief Fire Officer for West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service, has also been awarded an OBE for services to Fire and Rescue.

The Director of United Sikhs, Sundeep Kaur, has received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the community in Kingswinford.

In particular, the BEM has been awarded in recognition of the response to Covid-19.
