The annual cross country run may not have been the most popular event in the school calendar.

But at least, it was held in winter and it was a rare chance to keep yourself warm in the cold weather.

These boys from Magdalen College School in Oxford were taking part in the school’s cross country championships in South Park at the foot of Headington Hill in 1976.

The picture shows the start of the seniors’ race, which was won by Tom Glare in his first attempt.

Earlier, Kieran Boyle had smashed the record in the intermediates race which Tom had set the previous year, beating it by 23 seconds.
