A HOUSEHOLD recycling centre in Oldbury was forced to close this morning after a fire broke out in one of the recycling containers.
The tip in Shidas Lane was closed for a period of time this morning (June 25) as West Midlands Fire Service responded to the incident.
The fire service said it was called at 10.30am to reports of a fire in a recycling container containing household waste and metal.
No one was injured during the fire and crews left shortly after 11am.
In a statement, West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called by Sandwell Council to Shidas Lane at 10.30am to a fire involving a recycling unit.
"Two appliances attended from Oldbury and Brierley Hill and extinguished the fire involving mixed household waste and metal.
"Crews left the scene at 11.11am."
No cause has been determined for the fire.
Sandwell Council apologised to anyone who had an appointment booked during the tip's unexpected closure.
In a statement, a spokesperson from Serco, which manages the site, said, "We are aware of an incident that took place at 10.30 today at the Household Recycling Centre (TIP) in Shidas Lane, that we operate on behalf of Sandwell council.
"We can confirm no staff or members of the public were injured during the incident.
"The fire service was in attendance, and the site was closed for a short period of time while they were on-site.
"We would like to apologise to anyone who had an appointment booked while the site was closed."
Anyone who was unable to attend their pre-booked slot due to the closure was able to use the tip after it reopened until 4pm.
