Children at Lutley Primary School released scores of butterflies into the air to celebrate the opening of a wildlife garden marking the school’s 40th anniversary.

Volunteers, parents and pupils have been busy painting, planting and digging to transform a patch of desolate scrub ground at the school on Brook Willow Road into a beautiful butterfly garden.

As well as butterfly-friendly plants such as buddleias the garden features a pond and solar-powered fountain, colourful dragonfly mosaic and ‘bug hotels’ made of bamboo in which insects such as ladybirds can hibernate over the winter Deputy head teacher Cathy Walsh said: “The environment is a big part of our school improvement plan and the butterfly garden will be useful in teaching children about wildlife life cycles and habitats.”

Other events the children enjoyed during Celebration Week included filmaking, a fashion show and a visit from ex-pupil Mark Yates of Kiddiminster Harriers Football Club.
