SPEED warning signs are being installed on a dangerous Halesowen road in response to a request from Halesowen Athletic and Cycling Club.

The thriving club wanted the signs, which flash to warn drivers when they are exceeding the limit, to ensure motorists exiting the motorway slow down when near the exit to its Manor Way A456 ground.

The signs are being installed by Dudley Council which has also put red tarmacadam near the club exit.

Halesowen Athletic and Cycling Club's management committee chairman Bob Fowkes said: "There's a lot of traffic and when they come off the motorway they have been doing 70mph and have to adjust.

"We hope these warning signs will lower the speed.

"Some motorists really put their foot down and we don't want someone to get hurt.

"Our road race team exit the club there."

Bob said at the moment traffic is slower because the work to Grange Island means it has been down to one lane but when that's finished an assessment will be done to see if the speed warning signs work - if not he said a speed camera could be installed.

A spokesman for Dudley Council said: "Vehicle activated speed warning signs are being introduced on the A456 to advise drivers travelling from Birmingham and Junction three of the M5.

"We responded to a request from Halesowen Athletic and Cycling Club for the signs to improve safety for cyclists arriving and leaving the site in Manor Way.

"The signs will alert motorists to the 40mph speed limit as well as advising them of cyclists in the area, when the club is open.

"The signs will boost safety for all road users and complement the nearby improvement works at Grange Road island."
