THE World Society for the Protection of Animals has praised Cradley MP Margot James for pledging a commitment to animal welfare.

In the run up to the general election, WSPA contacted the candidates of all the main political parties asking for their support concerning three key animal welfare issues - the threat of a revival of commercial whaling, the illegal international trade in bear bile and moves to create massive indoor mega-dairies in the UK.

The society’s Voice for the Voiceless campaign attracted the support of dozens of MPs from all parties - including Cradley Tory MP Ms James.

She said: “I agree, and will actively oppose all the three points. I was not aware of point 2 but am well aware of the horrendous plans to keep such a large herd of cattle together and hardly let them out of their barn. Quite awful.”

During the past year, planning applications for two dairy and one pig mega-farm have been lodged - including a proposal to build western Europe’s largest indoor 8,100-strong herd ‘mega-dairy’ in Nocton, Lincolnshire, which is due to be heard imminently.

WSPA UK director, Suzi Morris, said: “To effect real change for animal welfare both in this country and around the world, the support of MPs like Margot James is critical.

“WSPA depends on close relationships with MPs in order to argue for and implement stronger animal protection initiatives, and to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of moves to safeguard vulnerable animals throughout the world.

“When we ask our supporters to write to their Member of Parliament on an issue of concern, they often need to be reassured this action will make a difference.

“Knowing MPs like Margot James take animal welfare seriously means we can bring about real change, and we very much appreciate the support they give WSPA on our campaigns.”
