A BUNGLING burglar who fell through the roof of a Windmill Hill dentists is behind bars and could have his foot amputated. Lee Garratt, aged 35, was found screaming in agony on the ground by Robert Stobart - the dentist whose surgery he was trying to burgle.

Garratt had broken his left leg on impact and now faced the prospect of having to have a foot amputated, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Garratt who was making his 16th appearance before a court for burglary had clearly received an "element of natural justice" for his criminality, said Miss Jodie Smith defending.

She said the raider had "suffered considerably" because of his decision to raid the surgery where he was after money to fuel his drug habit.

Garratt, now of no fixed address, admitted burglary and he asked for three other similar offences committed in the Stourbridge and Cradley areas to be taken into consideration.

Judge Nicholas Webb sentenced him in his absence from the dock because having his leg in plaster meant he could not get into a lift to gain access to Court room number 3 inside the building.

The Judge said it was clear he had sustained a serious leg fracture and that meant he could not join other prisoners in the cells.

He said Garratt had a "dreadful" record containing a string of burglaries but mainly on non-dwellings and added, "He has a drug problem he simply cannot control."

Judge Webb said he had been disturbed by the occupant when he broke into the flat and when he tried to escape he had fallen through a roof.

He jailed Garratt for 30 months for the burglary with a further six months because the offence breached a suspended prison sentence imposed by Halesowen and Dudley Magistrates.

The offences, said Mr Geoffrey Dann prosecuting, were all committed by Garratt within days of being given the suspended 26 week jail term.
