CASH-strapped Sandwell Council has drawn up plans to shell out £50,000 on traffic calming measures outside a Cradley Heath school where speeding is not an issue.

The proposals for Wrights Lane include speed ramps and the introduction of a 20mph zone to improve safety for children at Temple Meadow Primary School.

There will also be improved crossing facilities fro pedestrians at the Station Road junction by laying tactile paving and reducing the widths of the junctions to improve visibility.

But headteacher Cathy Walsh said it was “a bit odd” that the council had drawn up the scheme before talking to the school.

“There are so many vehicles parked dropping off in the morning and collecting at home time that cars can’t drive fast,” she said.

But at other times - when the children are not about - Ms Walsh said cars do speed down the busy road.

“I welcome anything that makes it safer and reduces speed and it can be used as a rat run,” she said, adding the scheme would have to be acceptable to residents.

Street scene area director Steve Handley said there will be consultations with the community and other interested parties.

“Any unresolved objections to the proposals would be the subject of a further report to the cabinet member,” he added.
