GREEN-minded pupils at a Halesowen primary school are being taught the importance of taking care of the environment at an early age through a series of recycling schemes.

Huntingtree Primary School, Bournes Hill, has introduced a strict recycling policy this year which is already proving popular with pupils and teachers alike.

Teacher Candice Virr, who nominated the school for the contest, claims hers is the greenest school in the borough as they recycle a host of items including paper, stamps, cans and even pupils' second hand shoes.

A green conscious code runs throughout the school with pupils aged between four and 11 taking part.

A composter was installed in the school last week where pupils can throw any food stuffs including fruit.

The school's environmentally friendly stance has also been boosted by placing a water butt on site.

Candice said: "The pupils are quite enthusiastic about it. They are bringing quite a few things from home and can see the benefits.

"It's made the children think about the future by raising awareness. We want to get all of the children involved.

"We are trying to get children to think about what they are throwing away.

"The various schemes raise more awareness of recycling in school."

Huntingtree Primary is gunning for Eco School' status and has been encouraging its pupils to adopt a greener approach since March this year.

The school also plans to set an Eco Code' where each classroom will follow a set of rules to help the environment, including urging pupils to turn off unncessary lights.

Go Green is a Dudley Council run contest to find the borough's greenest group and help slash the 87,000 tonnes of waste thrown away each year in Dudley.
