TWO masked men armed with a knife assaulted an elderly couple after bursting into their Gornal Wood home.

Jewellery was stolen in the Cinder Road burglary, which happened at around 7.30pm last night (Wednesday, December 27) and left the victims - who are both in their early 70s - shaken.

Paramedics treated the woman for injuries to her side and hand.

She was given pain relief and her wounds were dressed before she was taken to hospital for further treatment.

The man was assessed by ambulance staff but had not been injured.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "The men - who were armed with a knife - fled the scene on foot and officers are now reviewing CCTV in the area.

"House to house enquiries are being carried out and patrols have been stepped up to reassure the community."

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News: "First two unmarked police cars sped up the street, then three police cars and an ambulance arrived, all with blue flashing lights.

"People were out in the street, everyone was wondering what had happened and then were concerned for the couple after hearing that someone had burst into their house.

"It's a nice road and everyone does look out for each other. It's shocking when this happens. Hopefully they are okay."
