THE body of an elderly woman has been found in a canal in Brierley Hill.

Police, firefighters and medics were called to the waterway off Brythill Drive just after 8am this morning (Tuesday, December 31) following reports of a person in the water.

Emergency services raced to the canal where the woman, who has not yet been identified, was found.

A spokesperson from West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that five firefighters from Haden Cross attended the scene along with support from colleagues from the Technical Rescue Unit based in Wednesbury, where they retrieved the woman’s body from the water.

The woman's death is not currently being treated as suspicious, police confirmed.

A spokesperson from West Midlands Police said: "Police were alerted after the body of an elderly woman was found in the canal off Brythill Drive, Brierley Hill just after 8am this morning (31 Dec).

"Her death is not currently being treated as suspicious and efforts are on-going to identify her."

A spokesperson from West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called to reports of a body being found in a canal at around 8.20am.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Hazardous Area Response Team were immediately responded to the scene.  Unfortunately, when the body of woman was brought out of the water by firefighters it was clear that nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.”
