A GREAT-great-grandmother was given a 100th birthday to remember thanks to kind-hearted staff at her Wordsley care home.

Phyllis Goode turned 100 on Tuesday, June 16 and to celebrate, staff at Redbrick Court Care Home threw a 1920s themed birthday bash to mark the milestone.

Mrs Goode dressed up in flapper style clothes, decorations and residents were treated to a visit from the ice cream van.

Beverley Whittaker, manager of Redbrick Court, said: "Phyllis is lovely bubbly lady who always has a smile on her face. She always takes time to talk to staff and other service users.

"She loves a party and was looking forward to her birthday so she helped us plan the party. We wanted to make it extra special for her as family and friends are unable to celebrate it with her due to Covid-19 and the lockdown. It was a really great day."

Phyllis' long life has seen her serve both her community and country, through her efforts during the Second World War and later through her marriage to Dudley councillor and magistrate Reg Goode who she supported with his duties.

She was also an a school councillor and met the Queen on several occasions thanks to her civic work.

Born in Brierley Hill in 1920, Phyllis grew up over her parents' fruit and vegetable shop in Brockmoor.

She helped with deliveries, learning to drive when she was 14 and did not stop getting behind the wheel until she was 91-years-old.

During the Second World War she drove heavy good lorries to secret locations across the Midlands and wider country, where she transported bombs, munitions, food and essential items to help the war effort.

After the war, Phyllis married Reg Goode who went on to become a Dudley councillor and Justice of the Peace.

The couple had four children and went on to have six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Her family said: "Phyllis has had a long and well lived life, always helping others and being so supporting and loving to all her sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

"She is loved by everyone in the family and everybody she meets and her family are so very proud of her reaching her 100th birthday."
